What is a rent increase notice?
A rent increase needs to be in writing, with enough notice, and you need to be able to show when the tenant received it. This notice sets out the current rent, the new rent and the date it starts, with an optional reason and the lease clause you rely on.
The tenant signs an acknowledgement of receipt underneath. That signature confirms receipt only — the notice says plainly that it is not agreement, and that the tenant keeps any right to challenge the increase. Notice periods, caps and prescribed forms are local law, so the template leaves them to you and the Help text points you to check them.

Tips Before You Send It
- Check local law first: many places cap increases, limit how often rent can go up, or require a set notice period or an official form.
- Allow extra time for delivery — the notice period usually runs from when the tenant receives the notice.
- If an official form is required, use it; this notice can go alongside as a covering letter.
- Save the signed acknowledgement with the lease in Files for the next review.

Rent increase notice: frequently asked questions
Does the tenant's signature mean they agree to the increase?
No. The acknowledgement confirms receipt only and states that it does not waive any right to challenge the increase, the amount or the start date.
How much notice do I have to give?
It depends on where the property is, the type of tenancy and the lease. The template doesn't set a figure; it says that if the law requires a longer period or a particular form, the new rent starts only when the law allows.
Can I use this during a fixed-term lease?
Only if the lease has a rent review clause that allows it, or the tenant agrees. Otherwise the rent usually stays the same until the fixed term ends.
Is an e-signed rent increase notice valid?
Electronic signatures are generally accepted for ordinary agreements like a rent increase notice in the US (ESIGN Act and UETA), the UK, the EU (eIDAS) and Canada, though local rules can add requirements. VergeHR keeps an audit trail and a Certificate of Completion with the signed PDF.
