What is a boat rental agreement?
A boat rental agreement is used when an owner or rental business lets someone take a vessel out without crew — a pontoon for an afternoon on the lake, a jet ski by the hour, a sailboat for the weekend or a fishing boat for the day. The renter takes command, so the agreement has to be clear about who may drive, how many people can go aboard, where they may go and who pays if the boat is damaged.
The template covers the vessel, its registration and safety equipment, its condition at handover, the rental period and dock, a specific operating area, named operators with any licence or boating certificate and a minimum age, a passenger limit, safety rules (life jackets, jet ski lanyards, no-wake zones, weather), prohibited uses such as towing and racing, the fee, fuel and deposit, weather cancellations and the renter's cancellation window, accidents and reporting, damage including grounding and propellers, insurance and excess, and assumption of risk.

Using the boat rental agreement, step by step
1 Describe the vessel
Choose the type, enter the make, model, length and engine, and the registration or hull number. Edit the list of safety equipment on board and the condition at handover, and take dated photos.
2 Set the period and area
Enter departure and return dates and times, the dock or marina, and a specific operating area. Set the maximum number of people on board — never more than the capacity plate.
3 Name the operators
List who may drive and their licence or boating safety certificate, and set a minimum age. Many places require a certificate and set age limits, especially for jet skis.
4 Fees, insurance and send
Enter the fee, choose the fuel arrangement and a damage deposit, and say whether your insurance covers the rental or the renter must insure. Then send it for signature before departure.
Tips Before You Send It
- Check that your insurance covers renting the vessel out, and whether local law requires a charter or rental licence to do so.
- Give every renter a hands-on briefing on the controls, safety equipment and operating area before they leave the dock.
- Check the forecast yourself — the template lets you delay, cancel or call the boat back if conditions are unsafe.
- Mark the operating area on a chart or map and give the renter a copy.

Boat rental agreement: frequently asked questions
Does the renter need a boating licence?
It depends on where you are, the type of vessel and the operator's age. Many places require a boating safety certificate or licence, particularly for jet skis. The template requires each operator to hold whatever the law requires and to show it before departure.
What if the weather turns bad?
The owner may delay, cancel or call the vessel back for unsafe conditions. If the owner cancels for weather, the renter can choose another date or a refund for the time lost.
Who pays if the boat runs aground or hits something?
The renter is responsible for loss or damage during the rental, including grounding, hitting submerged objects and propeller damage, plus towing costs caused by misuse. If the owner's insurance covers it, the renter pays up to the excess or deductible.
Can a boat rental agreement be signed online?
In most countries, including the US (ESIGN Act and UETA), the UK, the EU (eIDAS) and Canada, an electronic signature is generally valid for an ordinary rental contract like this one. VergeHR keeps an audit trail and a Certificate of Completion with the signed PDF.
Is this template free?
Yes. The template is free to use with the eSignature app in VergeHR, and the renter doesn't need a VergeHR login to sign.
