What is a boat slip rental agreement?
A boat slip rental agreement (sometimes called a dockage or berth agreement) sets out the deal between a marina, yacht club or private dock owner and the owner of a boat kept there. It identifies exactly which vessel may use which slip, for how long and at what price, and — just as importantly — who carries the risk when weather, fire or another boat causes damage.
This template covers the slip and the boat (make, length and beam, name and registration), a fixed season or a month-to-month term, the slip fee and any deposit or late charge, shore power and water, how the slip may be used (no subletting, charters, major repairs or discharges, and whether living aboard is allowed), the owner's duty to keep the boat seaworthy and storm-ready, insurance, the marina's right to board or move the boat in an emergency, unpaid fees and removal at the end. You add your own marina rules, and VergeHR places both signature blocks and initials on every page.

Using the boat slip rental agreement, step by step
1 Describe the boat exactly
Enter the make, model and year and the length overall and beam — slips are sized and often priced by length, so include bowsprits, swim platforms and outboards. Add the name and registration or documentation number if the boat has them.
2 Pick the slip, term and fee
Choose what is rented (slip, mooring, dry storage or lift), give the slip number, and choose a fixed season with an end date or a month-to-month rental. Set the fee, whether it is monthly, per season or per year, when it's due, and any deposit or late charge.
3 Set utilities, living aboard and insurance
Say whether shore power and water are included, metered or not available. Choose whether living aboard is allowed, and state the insurance you require — for example a minimum liability limit — or leave it blank to require what the marina reasonably asks for.
4 Add your rules and send
Paste your marina rules one per line. Tick "This is me" for the marina, add the boat owner's name and email, and VergeHR builds the PDF with signature, date, title and initials boxes placed. The signed copy is filed in Files and emailed to both of you.
Tips Before You Send It
- Ask for proof of insurance before the boat arrives, and note the policy's renewal date.
- Get an emergency phone number — the agreement lets the marina act in an emergency, but it should try the owner first.
- Rights over a boat for unpaid fees (such as a lien) depend on local law and usually require specific steps. Check them before relying on them.
- If you charge by the foot, measure the boat on arrival rather than relying on the brochure length.

Boat slip rental agreement: frequently asked questions
Is the marina responsible if the boat is damaged?
The template says the marina rents space only and does not take custody of the boat, so the boat is kept at the owner's risk. The marina remains responsible for its own negligence and for anything the law does not allow it to exclude. How far such clauses are enforceable varies from place to place.
Can the boat owner sell the boat and pass on the slip?
Not automatically. The agreement is tied to the named boat, and the owner needs the marina's written consent to keep a different vessel in the slip or to transfer the slip with a sale.
Does this work for moorings and dry storage too?
Yes. Choose "a mooring", "a dry-storage space" or "a boat lift" and the wording follows. Leave shore power as "not provided" where there is none.
Is an e-signed slip agreement binding?
In the US (ESIGN Act and UETA), the UK, the EU (eIDAS) and Canada, electronic signatures are generally valid for ordinary contracts like this one. VergeHR keeps an audit trail and a Certificate of Completion with the signed PDF as evidence of who signed and when.
Is this template free?
Yes. The template is free to use with the eSignature app in VergeHR. The other party doesn't need a VergeHR login to sign.
