What is a dog training agreement?

A dog training agreement sets out what a trainer will teach, what the owner must do, and the ground rules that keep every dog and person safe: up-to-date vaccinations, honest disclosure of any bite or aggression history, and keeping unwell dogs at home. It also makes clear that training can't guarantee a result — progress depends on the dog and on the owner practising.

This template covers the dog's details and vet, group classes, private sessions or both, the course or programme, location and training methods, the owner's attendance and practice, equipment and cleaning up, vaccinations and illness, bite and behaviour history, vet care during sessions, safety and the owner's responsibility for the dog, a release to the extent the law allows, no guaranteed results, fees, moving private sessions, missed group classes, refunds and photos. VergeHR places both signatures, dates and initials.

Using the dog training agreement, step by step

1 Enter the owner and the dog

Add the owner's name and contact, the dog's name, breed, age and sex, and its vet. Record any behaviour, health or bite history, however minor.

2 Describe the training

Choose group classes, private sessions or both, and describe the course — number of sessions, length, day and start date — and where it takes place. Edit the training methods line if you describe your approach differently.

3 Set the vaccination rule

The vaccination line is pre-filled with a vet-led requirement. Adjust it to what your venue and your vet advise.

4 Fees and send

Enter the fee and whether it's per course, session or month, when it's paid, and the notice needed to move a private session. Add the owner as signer and send.

Tips Before You Send It

  • Ask your own vet which vaccinations to require, and check local rules — some, such as rabies, are regulated in some places.
  • Take the bite-history question seriously. The owner confirms they have disclosed every incident, which helps you decide whether a group class is right.
  • Owners stay responsible for their dog at all times under this template. Suggest they check whether their insurance covers training.
  • Keep females in season and dogs with signs of infectious illness out of group classes — the template asks owners to keep them at home.

Dog training agreement: frequently asked questions

Does the trainer guarantee results?

No. The template explains that progress depends on the dog's age, breed, temperament, health and history and on the owner practising consistently, so no particular result or change in behaviour is guaranteed.

Who is responsible if a dog bites during training?

The owner remains responsible for their dog, including injury or damage it causes. The trainer is responsible for its own negligence, and to the extent the law allows is not otherwise liable for the normal risks of dog training.

What if a dog is not suitable for a group class?

The trainer may ask for the dog to be kept at a distance or remove it from the group, and then offers private sessions of equal value or a refund of the remaining classes.

Is a dog training contract signed online valid?

In most countries, including the US (ESIGN Act and UETA), the UK, the EU (eIDAS) and Canada, an electronic signature is generally valid for an ordinary services contract like this one. VergeHR keeps an audit trail and a Certificate of Completion with the signed PDF as evidence of who signed and when.

Can I change the wording?

You fill in the blanks and choose the options on the setup page; optional clauses appear only when you fill them in. If you need different clauses, draft your own document and upload it to VergeHR eSignature instead — you can still place the signature boxes in the editor.

Is this template free?

Yes. The template is free to use with the eSignature app in VergeHR. The person you send it to doesn't need a VergeHR login to sign.
