What is a mentorship agreement?

A mentorship agreement is a short, friendly document a mentor and mentee sign at the start of a mentoring relationship. It isn't about legal obligations — it is about expectations. Mentoring relationships most often fade because nobody agreed how often to meet, who books the meetings, or what the mentee actually wants to get out of it. Writing that down in the first session fixes all three.

This template records the mentee's goals and, optionally, how you'll know it's working. It sets the meeting frequency, length and format, who arranges meetings and whether contact between meetings is welcome. It lists what the mentor and the mentee each commit to, covers confidentiality (with sensible exceptions and, for a formal programme, what organisers may be told), and sets boundaries — mentoring sits outside line management and advice isn't professional advice. It ends with a fixed duration, a halfway review and a no-fault way for either person to close the relationship.

  2. Meetings
  3. What we expect of each other
  4. Confidentiality
  5. Boundaries
  6. Review and ending

Using the mentorship agreement, step by step

1 Write two to four specific goals

Goals belong to the mentee. "Prepare for a team-lead role within a year" is far more useful than "career development". Add how you'll know it's working if you can — it makes the halfway review easy.

2 Agree the rhythm

Choose how often you meet, for how long and where. Decide who books the meetings — usually the mentee, with a short agenda — and whether quick questions between meetings are welcome.

3 Name the programme if there is one

If you're part of a formal programme, enter its name. The agreement then says organisers may be told whether meetings are happening and how it is going in general, but not what you discussed.

4 Set the length and sign

Pick a duration and send it. Both of you sign online; the signed copy is filed in Files and emailed to both of you.

Tips Before You Send It

  • Fill it in together in your first meeting rather than sending it cold.
  • Keep the goals visible — revisit them at the start of every few meetings.
  • A no-fault ending is normal. If it isn't working, say so and close it well.
  • Use the halfway review to reset goals, not just to check a box.

Sign It Online In Minutes

  2. Name who signs. Tick “This is me” for your own part. VergeHR builds the PDF with every signature, date box on the right line, and you can check or move anything before sending.
  3. Send it. Each signer gets a secure link and signs from any device — no account needed. The signed PDF, with an audit trail and a Certificate of Completion, is filed in Files and emailed to everyone.

Mentorship agreement: frequently asked questions

Is a mentorship agreement legally binding?

This one is written as a voluntary, good-faith understanding, not an employment or commercial contract. It records expectations; it isn't meant to be enforced in court. If a mentor is paid, a consulting or coaching agreement is the better fit.

What should stay confidential in mentoring?

The template keeps what you discuss between you, with exceptions where someone's safety is at risk, the law requires disclosure, or serious wrongdoing must be reported under a policy that applies to you.

Can the mentor be the mentee's manager?

It works best when they aren't. The agreement says mentoring sits outside line management and that conversations won't be used in performance reviews or pay and promotion decisions.

Is an electronic signature fine for this?

Yes. Electronic signatures are generally valid for ordinary agreements in the US (ESIGN Act and UETA), the UK, the EU (eIDAS) and Canada, and VergeHR keeps an audit trail with the signed PDF.

Is this template free?

Yes. It is free to use with the eSignature app in VergeHR, and the other person doesn't need a VergeHR login to sign.
