What is a kids pet responsibility contract?
"I promise I'll look after it!" is what every child says before a new pet arrives. A pet responsibility contract turns that promise into a clear list of jobs your child can actually do — feeding, fresh water, walks, cleaning up, brushing — and makes it a proper, signed commitment they can feel proud of.
This template is written in simple words a child can read and understand. It covers the child's promise, jobs every day and every week (one per line, pre-filled so you only need to adjust them), the "I will always" safety and kindness rules, what the parents will do — food, vet care, medicine and teaching each job — rewards for doing a great job, how many reminders come before a consequence, and a family check-in date. It says plainly that the grown-ups are always responsible for making sure the pet is safe and cared for. Your child can sign with a finger on a phone or tablet.

Using the kids pet responsibility contract, step by step
1 Name your child and your pet
Add your child's first name, the parents, and the pet's name and kind. The pet's name appears throughout the contract, so it feels personal.
2 Choose the jobs
Edit the daily and weekly job lists — one job per line. Pick jobs that suit your child's age, and keep anything risky, like medicine or handling a strong dog near roads, as a grown-up job or a job done together.
3 Write the parents' part
The parents' list is pre-filled: buying food and supplies, vet care and bills, teaching each job, reminding kindly and helping when your child is ill or away.
4 Set reminders, rewards and consequences
Choose how many reminders come first, and write a fair consequence and an optional reward — like a sticker chart. Add a check-in date, then sign together.
Tips Before You Send It
- Read it aloud together and let your child suggest jobs and rewards — they'll own it more.
- Young children can do more than you'd think with a grown-up alongside: measuring food, filling the water bowl, holding the lead.
- Make consequences about the child, never the pet — the pet is always fed and cared for, whatever happens.
- Stick the signed contract on the fridge next to a job chart, and add jobs as your child grows.

Kids pet responsibility contract: frequently asked questions
What age is a pet responsibility contract for?
Children from about five upward, with jobs matched to their age. Younger children can do simple jobs with a grown-up; older children and teens can take on walks, cleaning and grooming on their own.
What if my child forgets their jobs?
Everyone forgets sometimes. The contract gives a set number of reminders; after that, a grown-up does the job so the pet never goes without, and the consequence you wrote applies — for example, less screen time.
Is it a legal contract?
No. It says clearly that it is a family agreement and that the grown-ups are always responsible for the pet. Signing it simply makes the promise feel real — and gives you a dated copy to look back on.
Can my child sign electronically?
Yes. Your child can sign with a finger on a phone or tablet. VergeHR keeps the signed copy in Files, so you can print it or find it again at check-in time.
Is this template free?
Yes. The template is free to use with the eSignature app in VergeHR.
