What is a nanny share agreement?

In a nanny share, two families employ one nanny to care for their children together, usually in one family's home or alternating between both. Each family pays less than it would for a nanny of its own, the nanny usually earns more per hour, and the children get company. But shares fall apart over the details: who pays when a child is sick, who buys the nappies, what happens during one family's holiday, and how much notice a family must give when it leaves.

This template is the agreement between the two families. It records each family's children, the nanny, the days and hours, and where care takes place. You set the nanny's hourly rate for the share and how it is split — equally, by number of children, or your own split — and how payroll works. It covers paid holidays and sick days, an optional monthly contribution to the host family, food and supplies, outings and driving, agreed routines, what happens when a child is absent or the nanny is ill, joint decisions on hiring and dismissal, and how either family can leave the share with notice. Each family still needs its own written agreement with the nanny.

Using the nanny share agreement, step by step

1 Add both families and the nanny

Enter each family's parents, address and children with their ages, and the nanny's full name. Add the start date and the days and hours the nanny will care for the children together.

2 Choose the host home

Choose the First Family's home, the Second Family's home, or alternating, and add details such as which week starts where or which rooms are used. The agreement includes the host family's duty to keep its home childproofed and to check its insurance.

3 Set pay and payroll

Enter the nanny's gross hourly rate for the share and how the families split it. Choose how payroll works, describe the nanny's paid holidays and sick days, and add a monthly contribution to the host family if you use one.

4 Agree daily care and leaving

Edit the food and supplies paragraph, choose outings and transport, and write down shared routines like naps and screen time. Set the notice a family must give to leave the share — 30 days is pre-filled — then add the other family as a signer and send.

Tips Before You Send It

  • Agree the sick-child and holiday rules before you start — they cause more nanny-share disputes than anything else.
  • In many places a nanny is a household employee, and each family may have tax, payroll and insurance duties. Check the rules where you live, or use a nanny payroll service.
  • Give the nanny their own written work agreement that matches this one on hours, pay and leave.
  • Hold a short monthly check-in between the families, and bring any concerns to the nanny together, not separately.
  • If you alternate homes, agree what stays where — a travel cot, car seats, spare clothes — to avoid daily hauling.

Nanny share agreement: frequently asked questions

Who employs the nanny in a nanny share?

It depends on how you set it up and on local law. Often each family employs the nanny for its share of the hours and runs its own payroll; sometimes one family runs payroll and the other reimburses it. The template lets you record which approach you use and makes each family responsible for its own share of employer costs.

Does a family still pay when its child is sick or on holiday?

Under this agreement, yes — the absent family keeps paying its usual share, so the nanny's pay and the other family's cost stay the same. You can agree something different in writing.

What happens if one family wants to leave?

It gives the other family and the nanny written notice (you choose how many days) and keeps paying its share during that time. The families cooperate to find a replacement, and the remaining family decides whether to keep the nanny on alone.

Is an electronically signed nanny share agreement valid?

Electronic signatures are generally valid for ordinary agreements like this in the US (ESIGN Act and UETA), the UK, the EU (eIDAS) and Canada. VergeHR keeps an audit trail and a Certificate of Completion with the signed PDF.

Is this template free?

Yes. It is free to use with the eSignature app in VergeHR, and the other family doesn't need a VergeHR login to sign.
