What is a pet grooming agreement?

A pet grooming agreement — often called a grooming release — is signed by a pet owner before a groomer works on their dog or cat. Grooming is hands-on work with animals that may be old, anxious or hiding skin problems under their coat, so groomers need clear permission to put welfare first, and owners deserve a clear picture of what can go wrong.

This template records the pet, health and behaviour notes, vaccinations and usual vet, and the services and price. It can cover a single appointment or all future grooms. It explains that the groomer doesn't sedate and may stop if the pet is too stressed, that badly matted coats may be shaved rather than painfully de-matted, and that grooming can reveal existing conditions. It gives emergency vet authority with an optional spending limit, and sets late-pickup, missed-appointment and flea-treatment charges, plus photo use only with permission.

Pet grooming agreement: frequently asked questions

Can a groomer shave a matted dog without asking?

Under this agreement, yes, where the coat is badly matted the groomer may shave it short instead of de-matting, to put the pet's welfare first. The owner agrees to that in advance, and the agreement explains that shaving can uncover nicks or skin problems hidden under the mats.

What happens if the pet is hurt or falls ill?

The groomer calls the owner straight away, then the second contact. If no one can be reached and the pet needs urgent care, the groomer may take it to a vet and authorise treatment up to any limit set. The owner pays, unless the groomer caused the injury through carelessness.

Do you sedate pets?

The agreement states the groomer doesn't sedate. A pet too stressed or aggressive to groom safely may be returned unfinished, with a charge for the work done.

Is the agreement free to use?

Yes, it's free with VergeHR eSignature, and owners sign from a link without creating an account. It's a starting point; check any local rules for animal businesses.
