What is a social media takeover agreement?

A takeover puts someone else's voice on your brand's account: a creator runs your Stories for a day, a chef takes over a restaurant's feed for a launch, an ambassador hosts a campaign week. It works because it feels spontaneous, but the brand is trusting an outsider with its audience and, often, its log-in. A short agreement sets the boundaries so the day goes well and nobody is left arguing afterwards about access, posts or who can reuse the content.

This template records the account, dates and hours, the brief and the minimum content. You choose how the creator posts — sending content for you to post, temporary team or collaborator access, or shared log-in details with extra security promises — whether each item needs approval or can go out live, and who handles comments and direct messages. The creator agrees content rules covering music rights, accuracy, members of the public and children, and your own guidelines, and promises clear advertising disclosure. It then covers the fee, gifted products and expenses, ownership of the content with a licence for your chosen uses and period, optional exclusivity, confidentiality, conduct and governing law.

Using the social media takeover agreement, step by step

1 Set up the takeover

Name the account(s), the date or dates and the hours the creator will be active. Write the brief in a few sentences and list the minimum content — for example ten Stories and one Reel, plus a post on the creator's own account announcing it.

2 Choose access and approvals

The safest option is for the creator to send content and the brand to post it. If you give access, platform team or collaborator tools are better than sharing a password; if you do share one, the agreement requires the creator to keep it secure and the brand to change it afterwards. Then choose whether every item is approved first and who replies to comments and messages.

3 Add your guidelines, fee and rights

List any topics to avoid, hashtags to use or competitors not to mention. Enter the fee, any products provided and expenses covered. Choose where you may reuse the content — your social accounts, your website and email, or paid advertising too — and for how long, plus any exclusivity.

4 Send for signature

Add the brand contact who can be reached on the day, the governing law and the creator's email. Once signed, share the brief and access details separately and securely.

Tips Before You Send It

  • Don't send passwords in the agreement or by email — use the platform's team tools where you can.
  • Turn on two-factor authentication for the brand account before any takeover.
  • Use music from the platform's commercial library — business accounts may not have access to the same tracks as personal ones.
  • Agree a quick way to reach the brand contact during the takeover, like a group chat.

Social media takeover agreement: frequently asked questions

Who owns the content the creator posts?

The creator keeps ownership and grants the brand a licence. The takeover posts can stay on the brand's account indefinitely; wider reuse — on the brand's site, in email or in paid ads, as you choose — is allowed for the number of months you set, or without a time limit if you leave that blank. The creator can share the content in their own portfolio.

Does the creator have to label the takeover as an ad?

The agreement requires it. The creator treats posts on their own account about the takeover as advertising and clearly discloses the paid relationship, for example with the platform's paid-partnership label or #ad, as advertising and platform rules require. The brand agrees not to ask the creator to hide it.

What if the creator posts something off-brand?

The brand can remove or edit any content, or end the takeover early, if it reasonably believes the content breaks the content rules or could harm its reputation. If the brand ends it early for a reason that isn't the creator's fault, it still pays the full fee.

Is an electronically signed creator agreement valid?

Electronic signatures are generally valid for ordinary contracts like this in the US (ESIGN Act and UETA), the UK, the EU (eIDAS) and Canada. VergeHR keeps an audit trail and a Certificate of Completion with the signed PDF.
