What is a makeup and hair artist agreement?

A makeup artist contract books a makeup or hair artist for a wedding party, event or shoot and sets out the plan for the morning: who is having what done, when the artist starts and when everyone must be ready, whether there is a trial, and how the deposit, travel and cancellation work. It also covers the health and hygiene questions every artist needs answered.

This template covers the booking and location, services and prices per person, assistants, adding people on the day, a trial (or none), what the client provides (light, space, power), arriving with a clean face and dry hair, allergies, skin conditions and patch tests, hygiene, the total, travel and early-start charges, deposit and balance, cancellation and date changes, a replacement artist if the artist is ill, portfolio photos and liability. VergeHR places both signatures, dates and initials.

Using the makeup and hair artist agreement, step by step

1 Set the time and place

Enter the occasion, date and location, when you start and when everyone must be ready. You then plan the running order and share it with the client.

2 List each person and service

Enter one person or group per line with the service and price, and the total number of people. Mention assistants if you bring any.

3 Add a trial if you offer one

Enter the trial date, and a trial fee if it is charged on top of the total. Leave the date empty and the agreement says no trial is included and asks for reference photos instead.

4 Price and send

Enter the total, any travel or early-start charges, the deposit and when the balance is due, and the late-cancellation window. Add the client as signer and send.

Tips Before You Send It

  • Ask about allergies and skin conditions for everyone in the party, not just the client — the template makes the client pass the question on.
  • Build a buffer into the "ready by" time; the template lets you shorten the service for anyone who arrives late so the schedule holds.
  • Put parking costs on the client's side if the venue charges; the template says so when you add a travel charge.
  • Only post photos of people who agree. The template also rules out photos while anyone is getting dressed.

Sign It Online In Minutes

  1. Fill in the blanks. Names, dates and amounts go straight into the agreement — the preview shows exactly where.
  2. Name who signs. Tick “This is me” for your own part. VergeHR builds the PDF with every signature, date and initials box on the right line, and you can check or move anything before sending.
  3. Send it. Each signer gets a secure link and signs from any device — no account needed. The signed PDF, with an audit trail and a Certificate of Completion, is filed in Files and emailed to everyone.

Makeup and hair artist agreement: frequently asked questions

Do I need a contract as a makeup artist?

A written agreement makes the deposit, timing and cancellation terms clear before you turn down other bookings for the date. It also records health information and what the client provides on the day.

What if someone in the party has a reaction?

The template asks the client to disclose allergies and conditions for everyone in advance and offers a patch test on request. The artist is not responsible for a reaction caused by an allergy or condition that was not disclosed, or by a product the client asked the artist to use.

What happens if the artist is ill?

The artist tells the client as soon as possible and tries to arrange a replacement artist of similar skill. If the client does not accept a replacement, all payments are refunded in full.

Is a makeup artist contract signed electronically valid?

In most countries, including the US (ESIGN Act and UETA), the UK, the EU (eIDAS) and Canada, an electronic signature is generally valid for an ordinary services contract like this one. VergeHR keeps an audit trail and a Certificate of Completion with the signed PDF as evidence of who signed and when.

Can I change the wording?

You fill in the blanks and choose the options on the setup page; optional clauses appear only when you fill them in. If you need different clauses, draft your own document and upload it to VergeHR eSignature instead — you can still place the signature boxes in the editor.

Is this template free?

Yes. The template is free to use with the eSignature app in VergeHR. The person you send it to doesn't need a VergeHR login to sign.
